An estimation of the resources required to deliver a net-zero economy for the UK by 2050
Professor Michael Kelly, FRS, FREng, Cambridge, UK

If we have a net-zero emissions economy in the UK by 2050, three large engineering projects will have been completed: (i) ground transport will have been electrified, (ii) heat, both residential and industrial, will have been electrified and (iii) the electricity generation, transmission and distribution sector will have been doubled in size to enable the first two projects to operate. In this talk, I will estimate the costs, human resources and materials needed to complete these three projects and argue that none of the three can be provided in time to deliver the net-zero economy in time.
